Obit of the Day: Edelweiss Pirate

Not every young man and woman in Nazi Germany was a member of the Hitler Youth. Thousands of teenagers, who had dropped out of Nazi-run schools, were simply counter-culture troublemakers but eventually transformed themselves into an active resistance against Hitler and his government. They called themselves “The Edelweiss Pirates.” The Gestapo called them criminals.

Jean Jülich joined the Pirates in 1942 at the age of 13. Originally drawn together by long hair and their love of unauthorized music, the group began delivering anti-Nazi propaganda, transporting bomb supplies, and pouring sugar in military vehicle gas tanks. In 1944, at only 15 years old Jülich was arrested by the Gestapo, tortured and imprisoned for attempting to blow up the agency’s headquarters in Cologne. He spent the rest of the war in a concentration camp before the Americans liberated him in 1945.

But Jülich’s fight was not over. Because he Pirates were made up of teens from the lower class and maintained their “outsider” culture following the war, the new German government refused to recognize their work, even allowing all criminal charges documented by the Gestapo to remain on their records.

Sixty years later Jülich and other Pirates - now senior citizens - earned the respect they deserved. Although Israel’s Yad Vashem recognized the Pirates in 1988 as “Righteous Among the Nations” (Jülich was named a “righteous Gentile” in 1984), it wasn’t until 2005 that Germany declared the Pirates “rehabilitated” and their criminal records were wiped clean.

Jean Jülich was 82 years old.

I was doing a project in class about movies today, and one I picked was Sophie Scholl: The Final Days. After that, I remembered that today, (or the day I’m submitting, really) is the anniversary of her death in 1943.

I must say she is one of my girl crushes, for looks and actions.

Wikipedia says: Sophia Magdalena Scholl (9 May 1921 – 22 February 1943) was a German student, active within the White Rose non-violent resistance group in Nazi Germany. She was convicted of high treason after having been found distributing anti-war leaflets at the University of Munich with her brother Hans. As a result, they were both executed by guillotine.

The orange/red liquid was confirmed by several sources to be CS mixed with orange or red paint(different in different areas of the city) to tag protesters for later identification.
It should be clarified that it WAS NOT agent orange, a rumour that spread a lot. agent orange is colourless, named after orange stripes on the barrels it was shipped in.
